Water Buffelo | 5 | Noel Herman | Salon - The monochrome suits this image, softening the other background animals. The light on the face is well-handled. The white dots, presumably insects, adds to the story. |
Hippo At Play | 3 | Noel Herman | Salon - The image shows movement and it would have great to have been there with the author. The DoF has been well handled, but overall the image is a bit dark. Perhaps colour would have been better for this image. |
Calm waters | 5 | Ruth Mooney | Salon - Lovely silky colours throughout with the boat providing a colourful focal point. Well-handled DoF giving the image a serene feel. |
Smugglers Bay | 5 | Ruth Mooney | Salon - This image has some lovely leading lines, curves and triangles and an interesting sky. It is nice and sharp throughout but could do with a lift in the mid-tones to brighten the bush area. |
In Flight Kereru | 5 | Pamela Stephen | Salon - A lovely soft image with beautiful colours and well done with the timing of your shutter button. The judges felt that cropping the RH side to the highest tree point would have improved the composition, putting more emphasis on the birds. Perhaps a wee lift in the mid-tones and saturation may also have enhanced it. |
Sardonic Dotteral | 7 | Pamela Stephen | Salon - This is a great image of this resting bird. Good on you for getting down low for this image. Lovely and sharp, and the good DoF really makes it stand out. One judge loved the errant feather while another didn't. Lovely natural colours. |
