Acorns. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED. A lovely still life study of these acorns, with an appealing arrangement and a gentle, natural story. The highlights are well controlled and the elements are thoughtfully chosen, with the central cup sitting comfortably in the mid third where this composition works best. The image is quite dark overall, which hides some of the beautiful textures, and the sharpest point appears to fall on the empty cup rather than the acorns themselves. Lightening the scene slightly and shifting the focus toward the main acorn would help the viewer connect more easily with the intended subject. The reflection is cropped a little tightly, and increasing the light on the central cap would add emphasis. Despite these refinements, the use of tone is sensitive and the arrangement is pleasing. A well considered attempt with room for technical and compositional adjustment.

Cyptotrama Aspirata. Salon. MERIT. A lovely capture of this bright yellow mushroom, with excellent colour and pleasing detail in the cap. The stem is a little soft, and the background noise creates a grainy, fuzzy look that distracts from the subject. The leaf in front and the small patch of moss in the centre foreground also pull the eye away from the mushroom. With cleaner foreground elements, reduced grain, and slightly more controlled depth of field, this could become a very striking nature study. The colour is well handled, and the overall depth of field is on the right track. It just needs a touch more refinement to let the mushroom truly shine.

-
Reflection. Salon. MERIT. A great opportunity taken here, with the puddle creating a lovely reflection of the van and the soft post rain light working nicely. The idea is strong and the creative use of the environment is clear. The scene is, however, quite busy, and several background elements compete for attention. The red box under the car and the blue vehicle in particular pull the eye away from the reflection. Tidying or softening these distractions would allow the mirrored van to become the true focal point. Blurring some of the background detail would also help simplify the frame and strengthen the visual impact. A thoughtful and well seen moment that would benefit from cleaner supporting elements to let the reflection shine.

Time to Visit. Salon. MERIT. A lovely capture of this iconic Whangarei spot, with the colours and playful shapes standing out beautifully. The image has great pop and crispness, giving it an inviting, almost postcard like feel. It really does make you want to walk there. The shadows are a little heavy, and brightening them would help reveal more detail, particularly in the darker architectural areas. The tree on the right feels slightly cut off, and a touch more breathing room would improve the balance. The lighting appears quite harsh, possibly midday, which has resulted in some blown highlights in the gold at the top turret. Despite the slightly tight crop and strong contrast, the scene remains vibrant and engaging. A cheerful and well handled image with room for refinement in exposure and framing.

-
Haematopus species. Salon. ACCEPTED. A lovely moment of the oystercatcher feeding at the water’s edge. The eye is beautifully sharp, giving the image a strong anchor and a natural point of connection. The black plumage, however, lacks feather detail and appears slightly washed out, suggesting the exposure or processing has lifted the tones a little too far. There is also a noticeable halo around the bird’s outline, which further reduces the sense of crispness. The depth of field and storytelling are good, but the absence of fine feather texture, likely a processing issue, weakens the technical strength. A gentle and engaging capture that would benefit from more careful handling of contrast, edge detail, and tonal refinement.

-
Galerina species. Salon. HONOURS. A well captured study of these beautiful yellow mushrooms, with the warm colour and use of light giving the cluster strong visual appeal. The arrangement is effective, but the depth of field is very shallow, causing parts of the group to lose definition and softening the overall impact. The image also tilts slightly to the left, and there is a touch of haze in the top left area that reduces clarity. A more controlled focus, a slightly brighter exposure, and a straighter presentation would strengthen the technical quality. Despite these refinements, the subject is engaging and the colour handling is very pleasing.

-
Forest Cascade. Salon. MERIT. A lovely, peaceful capture of this waterfall, with the water movement handled beautifully. The slow shutter speed gives the cascade a soft, calming flow that suits the portrait orientation well. The rocks and surrounding background are quite dark, which causes much of the moss and textural detail to be lost, and the leaf on the left becomes a small distraction. The lower portion of the image is also soft, so cropping up to the second rock would strengthen the composition and remove the weakest area. Lightening the overall exposure slightly would help recover detail in the darker tones and lift the mood. The white border feels a little wide and draws attention away from the image itself. Despite these refinements, the scene remains soothing and well observed, with the water rendered particularly nicely.

-
Little Shag. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED. A lovely capture of this shag, perched calmly as if meditating in the sunlight. The colours in the water are beautifully handled and add a pleasing vibrancy to the scene, and the catchlight in the eye gives the bird a gentle sense of life. The story is well seen, with the bird looking a little wet and bedraggled, as though it has paused to dry out. There is, however, quite a lot of empty space at the top of the frame, which pulls attention away from the subject; a crop from the top would strengthen the composition. Some detail is lost in the bright chest feathers, and the image appears slightly over sharpened in places. Despite these small issues, the placement of the bird and the overall mood are engaging, making this a peaceful moment with room for refinement in tonal control and composition.

-
Mum and Young Zebra. Salon. HONOURS A beautifully captured motherly moment with zebra and foal. The foal’s direct gaze and pricked ears create an immediate connection with the viewer, and the gentle light and natural setting enhance the intimacy of the scene. The soft blur in both the foreground and background isolates the pair nicely, and the overall placement feels thoughtful and engaged. There is a lovely sense of story here, though the gazelle in the background could be softened further to keep the attention fully on the main subjects. A warm, expressive wildlife portrait with strong use of light and background control, and just a small opportunity to minimise competing elements.

-
Pigeon in Flight. Salon. HONOURS. A striking image of a pigeon in flight, beautifully revealing the subtle colours in its plumage that are so often overlooked. The overall softness lends a mystical, almost painterly quality, though it does come at the expense of fine feather detail, particularly around the tail where a small distraction at the top edge also catches the eye. The bird sits very centrally, and allowing more space on the left would give it room to fly into and improve the visual flow. The black background makes the subject stand out strongly, but it removes environmental context; a hint of the natural surroundings could have added to the storytelling. A graceful and engaging capture.

View from within the Blue Ball. Intermediate. An interesting and creative perspective of the bridge seen through the circular structure, offering a viewpoint that feels fresh and less commonly attempted. The concept is strong, but the overall darkness makes it difficult to appreciate the form of the bridge, and the dirt and marks on the window become quite dominant distractions. The bright white spot in the water also pulls the eye away from the intended focal point. Lightening the interior of the sphere would help reveal more of the blue tones and the detail in the bolts, adding visual interest and strengthening the story. The placement is effective, and the idea has real merit, but the image would benefit from additional clarity, cleanup of the spots, and a touch more detail inside the sphere to fully realise the creative intent.

Into the lake she goes. Intermediate. HIGHLY COMMENDED A great action capture of this lady diving into the lake, with excellent timing on the splash and a strong sense of movement. The colour in the lower part of the frame really pops and adds energy to the moment. The moody clouds contribute atmosphere, though they also make the overall scene feel a little dark. The diver is well positioned with good space to move into, but the lake occupies quite a lot of the frame, and a slight crop from the top and left (while keeping the right side intact) would help tighten the composition and bring more focus to the action. Despite the challenging conditions, this remains an enjoyable and lively moment well caught.

Lobster Pot Lookouts. Salon. ACCEPTED. What a fun and colourful image of these two starlings exploring the lobster pots. Their iridescent tones blend beautifully with the surrounding textures, and the catchlights in their eyes add a touch of life. The scene is naturally busy, and with the birds not fully sharp, the eye wanders a little as it searches for a clear point of focus. The strong light and likely crop have contributed to a slight loss of detail, but the colours and story remain engaging. A modest crop from the top and left could help tighten the composition while keeping the right side intact. Overall, a lively and cheerful capture in a challenging environment, with room for improvement in critical sharpness and refinement of the frame.

Toutouwai puffed for the storm. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED A beautiful portrait of this New Zealand robin puffed up and glancing back over its shoulder with wonderful eye detail and a clear catchlight. The monochrome treatment enhances the mood and supports the sense of an approaching storm suggested in the title, giving the image a strong emotional tone. Feather texture is very well rendered, especially through the body, and the soft background keeps the viewer’s attention firmly on the bird. The subject is engaging and undeniably cute, and the conversion and editing are handled with care; while the processing would be considered too strong for strict Nature rules, in Open it becomes a creative strength rather than a weakness.

-
Daisy Delight. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED A delightful study of this daisy, with the whites well controlled and the yellow centre vibrant, enhanced by the scattered pollen that adds appealing texture. The crisp detail through the lower petals is excellent, though the left side falls into a gentle haze that softens the overall impact. The choice to place the flower left of centre is creative and gives the image a dreamlike quality, but the negative space doesn’t yet feel purposeful; in a square format, a more central placement may have strengthened the natural symmetry of the subject. There is also a slight dark border artefact that draws the eye. Despite these small distractions, the colour pop, petal definition and overall mood are very pleasing. A charming floral image that would benefit from clearer intent in the composition and a touch more edge sharpness.

Urban Sentinel. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED. An interesting perspective on this sculptural light framed between the tall buildings. The photographer has clearly aimed for symmetry, but the verticals and horizontals don’t quite align. The left building appears taller and the lower architectural lines don’t meet evenly across the frame. This slight imbalance pulls attention away from the central feature. The engaging lines and selective use of colour work well, giving the subject a strong visual anchor. The sky at the top contributes little to the story and could be cropped if the photographer wished, though the overall balance remains acceptable either way. A thoughtful composition that would be strengthened by more precise alignment and a tighter focus on the key structural elements.

-
Southern Cassowary. Salon. MERIT The photographer has captured real personality here, this cassowary looks thoroughly unimpressed at being the centre of attention, which adds humour and character to the portrait. The eye detail is lovely and draws the viewer in. The softness through the neck, beak and upper head structure, however, does reduce overall sharpness, and these are important features for a bird with such striking anatomy. There is also a small artefact on the right side of the casque that distracts slightly, and the light haze over the horn could be refined to bring back more detail. Colour balance is well handled and the background is nicely managed, helping the subject stand out. A strong and engaging portrait with room for improvement in critical focus and minor cleanup.

-
Superb Fairy Wren. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED A lovely capture of this little fairy wren, with those vibrant blues standing out beautifully. The overall exposure is quite dark, and lifting the light would help reveal more feather detail and give the bird greater presence. The eye lacks a catchlight, which softens the sense of connection; even a small spark makes a big difference in bird photography. The composition works well, though a slight crop from the left would strengthen the balance. The story and placement are creative, and the key areas are acceptably sharp, but if this were entered in Nature, the bird would need more crispness and pop to carry the frame; for Open, the softer rendering still supports the narrative. A charming moment that would benefit from brighter tonality, a livelier eye, and a touch more emphasis on the bird itself.

Waiting for Summer. ACCEPTED. A strikingly wintery scene with a strong sense of stillness, the frozen dock and snow covered picnic tables creating an appealing focal point. The position of the subject on the lower third works well, and the stark, cold atmosphere is convincingly conveyed. The composition does feel unbalanced, however, with the large expanse of white sky dominating the upper half of the frame without adding mood or detail. The exposure appears inconsistent, with some highlights looking overly bright and the snow lacking crisp definition. Raising the contrast slightly would help restore texture and strengthen the overall impact. The focus is a little soft, and a tighter crop or lower viewpoint could have brought more attention to the dock’s shapes and surfaces. A well titled image with a strong sense of place, and one that would benefit from more controlled exposure and compositional refinement.

-
Watching Me Watching You. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED A charming wildlife moment, with the pup looking directly toward the photographer. A lovely point of connection that immediately draws the viewer in. The rocky textures complement the seals well, though the similar tones mean the subjects don’t separate from the background as strongly as they could. The relaxed, family portrait feel is appealing, and the zoom choice works nicely. A crop to remove some of the rocks on the lower right would help tidy the frame and place more emphasis on the interaction. The available light is used well, and the colour is natural and pleasing. Overall, a well seen and engaging capture with room for refinement in tonal separation and compositional balance.

-
Praying Mantis. Salon. ACCEPTED. A lovely close up of this mantis, with beautifully controlled greens and a creative angle that gives the insect real presence. The front legs are sharp and engaging, drawing the viewer straight to the character of the subject. Toward the tail end there is some softness, which becomes more noticeable against the clean white background. The concept of the white backdrop is strong, but the masking has left some ragged edges along the back of the insect, and the head and antennae appear slightly disconnected areas that could be refined with more careful cloning or edge cleanup. The light is handled creatively, though it has burned into some of the sharper areas. Retaining a touch of background contrast would help preserve detail and avoid that clipped look. Overall, a pleasing and well handled macro with good ideas, and just a few technical refinements needed to elevate it further.

Little Blue Penguin in protective hands. Salon. MERIT A lovely, gentle moment with this little penguin, handled with care and a clear sense of respect. The feather detail is well captured, and the penguin’s direct look toward the photographer adds a welcome point of engagement. The strong presence of the human elements shifts the image toward a documentary or rehabilitation narrative, which works, though it does reduce the sense of a pure wildlife portrait. Some blown out highlights on the white chest and noticeable sharpening artefacts, particularly on the head, detract from the overall refinement, and there are hints of red noise or over processed areas that could be cleaned up. A touch more contrast or light shaping would help the penguin stand out more clearly from its surroundings. An engaging and heartfelt capture with room for improvement in highlight control and processing finesse. (Previously entered into nature and not accepted).

Run Like The Wind. Novice. MERIT A lovely action shot of this beautiful horse, captured mid stride with a great sense of movement across the field. The tail looks wonderful in motion, and the leading lines through the grass guide the eye nicely toward the horse’s rump. There is some blur in the legs, which could be improved with a faster shutter speed next time, and the darker areas of the coat are very deep, causing the eye detail to get a little lost. Lifting the shadows would help restore that important texture. The bright strip of sky on the left crest of the hill draws attention, and cropping it out along with a little of the foreground and the small bush would strengthen the composition. The horse could also fill the frame a touch more to enhance impact. A difficult moment well seen, with good energy and flow, and room for refinement in exposure, cropping, and detail retention.

Traffic Ma’am? Novice. HIGHLY COMMENDED A wonderful slice of life street scene, with the viewpoint from inside the car adding an immediate storytelling layer and making us feel part of the traffic. The woman’s red sari pops beautifully at the centre of the frame and naturally becomes the focal point. The image is busy, but that busyness feels authentic to the environment and contributes to the energy of the moment. The foreground ornament provides useful context, though the crop is a little tight and it does compete slightly for attention. Allowing just a touch more space would help the scene breathe. The focus would still fall on the woman even with a wider view. A vibrant and engaging capture overall, with only minor refinements needed in cropping and presentation.

-
Vanuatu Toy. Salon. HIGHLY COMMENDED A nicely observed moment of this boy walking by the water, with the backpack adding a small but effective hint of story. The colour is pleasing and the placement works well, giving him space to move into. The image isn’t quite as sharp as it could be, suggesting it may have been cropped heavily, and a couple of small spots in the water catch the eye and could be tidied for a cleaner presentation. His shadow is also cut off, which slightly weakens the overall balance. As a quick, candid stranger portrait there’s only so much control you can have, but if this were a staged shot, a slightly lower angle would help keep the eye level and retain the full shadow. Raising the contrast a touch would also help manage the hard light and give the tones more depth. A relaxed and engaging everyday capture, with room for refinement in sharpness, framing, and tonal handling.

-
Doggy Day Cruise. Salon. ACCEPTED. A fun and engaging image capturing a relaxed moment on the water, with the two dogs adding plenty of charm. The reflections are a strong feature and help hold the composition together, even though the busy water surface competes a little for attention. The focus is slightly off, and the blown highlights on the right pull the eye away from the subjects. Because neither the dogs nor the paddler are looking toward the camera, the emotional connection is reduced, (and the absence of a buoyancy aid becomes a noticeable detail). The motion is well captured, the story is clear, and the frame is used effectively, but the over exposure and softness limit the technical strength. Overall, a cheerful scene with good potential, and more careful attention to focus, exposure, and engagement would strengthen it further.

Got an Itch. Salon. MERIT. A lovely capture of this colourful kingfisher, with excellent feather detail and a wonderfully expressive, almost comical mid squawk pose. The colour balance is strong and the story is engaging. The main limitation is the lack of eye detail. The dark band across the head hides structure that is crucial for bringing the bird to life, and lifting that area would make a noticeable difference. The bright water droplets on the wire are a little distracting, and the small white artefacts on the right side of the bird could be tidied in post processing. The double line in the perch is unfortunate, as it cuts through the feathers and interrupts the flow of the image. Despite these distractions, the sharpness is good in the key areas and the moment is well caught. A strong image with room for refinement in tonal control, cleanup, and perch presentation.
